About this site
The historical information on this website was compiled using both primary and secondary sources from both historical and horticultural sources. The historical sources in local and regional histories, diaries, scholarly journals, popular magazines, newspapers, maps, census data, and a variety of government documents. Horticultural information came from early garden books, seed catalogs, early garden magazines, newspaper articles, and additional references. Most of the images are vintage post cards, but a few are from old government documents.
If it looks like it was a lot of work, that's because it was. The good part is that it was also incredibly interesting.
Kathy Mendelson prepared this Website. A botanist by training, she has worked in public gardens, taught plant science at the community college level, and served as a consultant and speaker on garden history. She has been researching the story of gardening in the Pacific Northwest for more than 20 years.
