Jeff - Jeff and the
RF's A fan's review by Elizabeth Young |

I don't think there are any songs I don't like. I like the beat, I like the clever use of words and sound effects. It's hard for me to say which song I like best because they're all the best. I'd definitely rather hear Jeff & the RF's than a lot of those in the top ten. I'm going to mention a few of my favorites but it doesn't mean I don't like the others. Again, I think what makes the songs outstanding (besides the music) is the choice of words. I love "Roach Motel," I like the roosters, I love the beat. I think this song is fantastic. Okay, so I've always been biased towards intelligence. I really like "Heidi." Ron's choice of words fit the structure well, they don't seem forced. Somebody sounds a lot like George Harrison. Except for the rare times when the mike isn't close enough, Ron sings very well, enunciates very clearly. I can't stand it when people mumble. Musically, I can detect some of George Harrison's influence. Musically I can't say much because I don't know much about chords, etc. But I do know that the chords sound a little more intricate than a lot of musicians use. I'm biased, I know "Earthquake" is coming soon and that may be my favorite. I like "Work For the Money." It's also a song a lot of people can relate to, but as typical with RF's songs, it's a little more intellectual than the common "she works hard for the money" type song. I love "War Games" but it's hard to make the words out. What I can make out is great. Actually I should rephrase that, it's only a few words I can't understand, the rest are great! Did I say "Earthquake" was possibly my favorite yet? I like "Sanctuary/No Date For the Prom" too (Did I say I liked them all yet?). The problem is right now I'm just enjoying the music too much to want to analyze it. By the way, I had no date for the prom, too. I wish there were dates listed on the album so I could know when the songs were written. I really like "Communication." I also like the variety of the songs. I like "Hate In Your Heart" a lot, sounds like a song George Harrison would sing. Perhaps another best favorite ( I know… Maybe there is no comparison of songs here, I keep trying to say which are better favorites than other, but they all are). Beats Paul McCartney's latest any day! "Making Dreams Reality" is a best favorite. I like the way Ron and Jeff experiment with different things instead of always doing the same thing. If I don't mention a particular song, that in no way means I don't like it, it means I'm listening instead of analyzing. It's hard to do this because I'd much rather be just listening. I also like how Ron's songwriting has a personal touch. But I have to say I absolutely love the you-talk-to-everyone-but-me song ("Wall Of Silence"). "Heidi" (metal version) is okay but I prefer the other "Heidi" more. I really like "Love Song." That's all I need to say about it because I think it says it all - it's got great melody, great words, personal touch, everything. Only a special person would create something like that. I love "Old Records"'s sense of humor and originality. Ron Fowler has a great vocabulary. How many songwriters can say that? I love the harmonics. It's like Beatles' music in the sense that it pleasantly gets stuck in your head. I'll probably wake up in the middle of the night tonight and have a party going on in my head. If I do, it'll be Jeff and Ron's fault ("Party Everyday"). They can bring the Twinkies! |
