Gargoyles

Ugly, wooden flying creatures who live in the Land of Naught. They capture Dorothy and her friends, but they manage to escape by flying away with four sets of the Gargoyles' wings. Pursued by an enormous flock of Gargoyles, they seek refugue in the entrance to a cavern and hold the ugly wooden creatures at bay by setting fire to the wood available around them. To this day there has been much speculation as to whether this fire continued to burn and consume the whole Land of Naught, or it merely provided a firey shield long enough for Dorothy and her friends to perfect their escape.

First appears in: Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz
