A boney, old horse who travels with Dorothy in adventures in the Oz fairylands under the earth. Jim was born in Kentucky and originally was a race horse. Then for many years he pulled a cab in Chicago until he was retired to Hugson's Ranch. Like all earth animals who enter the Oz fairylands, he begins to talk during the earthquake induced fall through the earth to the Glass City. After bravely surviving the many dangerous challenges he faces with Dorothy and their fellow travelers, we discover that Jim suffers from the all to human weakness of pride when the Sawhorse bests him in a race. The humiliation is too much for Jim to bear and so he elects to return to California and his life on the ranch.
