The Writers and Illustrators
The rich imagination of L. Frank Baum created the fairylands of Oz and all its wonderful inhabitants, the magical and the humbugs, the charming and charmed, the merry and the mischevious. He was followed as the Royal Historian of Oz by Ruth Plumly Thompson. W. W. Denslow illustrated the first and most well-know book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, but the subsequent books by Baum and Thompson were illustrated by John R. Neill. This topic provides a biographical sketch of Baum. In the future, similar sketches of these other three principal contributors to the Ozian saga will be added.
An excellent summary of Baum's life, the events that shaped him as a writer, and his life's work, is provided by the Literary Traveler website. The article is titled The Man Behind the Curtain: L. Frank Baum and The Wizard of Oz.
Here are reprints of published magazine articles that provide additional information on Baum and his stories.
