This chapter introduces you to the Desktop help system. It tells you how to access the help system, the location of important files, and guidance on searching for topics in the help system.
The following topics are covered.
The help and online documentation system of the Network Desktop is designed to integrate the documentation from all components in a single easy-to-user interface. The nature of this interface also allow the documentation components to be located anywhere: on the user's machine, on a local network, or on another machine on the Internet.
This is accomplished by using the Worldwide Web protocols to provide help for applications, as well as online documentation (online "books"). By referring to a local environment variable, the help system can display documents that are located on the local machine, or on a distant host. Depending on the network speed, the user may not know that the document is not located on the same computer as an application for which help was requested.
In addition, documents that are located locally for speed or convenience sake can seamlessly link to related information, such as updates and technical resource documents, that are located at the developer's site or a system administrator's workstation.
Scripts and forms can be used to answer queries for specific topics that a user wishes to find.
Online help and documentation are provided for the following:
The Online Documentation system can be easily accessed by clicking the Information icon provided on the Desktop after you Install the Network Desktop. This document contains titles that you can click on to view any of the information resources listed in the previous section.
Searching for specific topics is not yet very easy, though the Desktop Help Screens do have an index.
