The BACKUP.UNET Customization and Reference Guide provides a single document that explains the concepts and components of BACKUP.UNETTM. Each concept is explained in detail in its own chapter. After reading about how a concept works, you can implement it as described in the user`s guide that corresponds to your user interface.
This guide contains the following chapters:
- Chapter 1, About BACKUP.UNET, describes the BACKUP.UNET performance and network service features.
- Chapter 2, BACKUP.UNET Concepts, provides an overview of basic terms and concepts used in BACKUP.UNET.
- Chapter 3, Managing Privileges, explains the privilege hierarchy within BACKUP.UNET and the functions associated with each privilege.
- Chapter 4, Backing Up Data, explains basic concepts about backing up data and discusses some common backup strategies.
- Chapter 5, Using a Worklist, explains how BACKUP.UNET uses a worklist to select the files and directories to backup. Also provides instructions for using the worklist keywords to modify the default worklist or to create your own worklist.
- Chapter 6, Restoring Data, explains the required permissions and includes some guidelines for restoring large files, files and directory permissions, symbolic links, and raw partitions.
- Chapter 7, Customizing the nbkMSGS File, explains each of the configuration parameters contained in the nbkMSGS file, and provides instructions on how to change them to customize BACKUP.UNET for your environment.

- Chapter 13, BACKUP.UNET Utility Reference, provides detailed reference information about each of the utilities you can use to rebuild or repair the tables in the BACKUP.UNET catalogs.
- Chapter 14, BACKUP.UNET Daemon Reference, explains each of the daemons (BRP, IOP, and scheduler) and other processes used in BACKUP.UNET.
- Chapter 15, BACKUP.UNET Home Directory Reference, describes the files and subdirectories in the BACKUP.UNET home directory.
- Chapter 16, System Recovery, provides step by step instructions for performing a full system recovery from your backup volumes.
- Chapter 17, Using Standard UNIX Utilities to Recover BACKUP.UNET Tables, provides instructions for using standard UNIX to recover BACKUP.UNET tables.
This book refers to specific sections in other BACKUP.UNET documentation that you might find useful as background or in support of this product. The sections are mentioned where their content is appropriate, and are as follows:
- Getting Started Guide. Provides an introduction to BACKUP.UNET, shows you how to set up a minimal configuration for your system, and provides fundamental procedures on backing up and restoring files, and updating the BACKUP.UNET software.
