The unit I have developed is on families. It is based in part on the "Family Photos" theme from the Houghton Mifflin reading curriculum my second grade class at Lister Elementary (Tacoma, WA) uses. The unit ran for three weeks. This unit is primarily a reading unit, though writing, grammar, social studies and art will also be dealt with during the course of the theme unit.

Two stories from the curriculum will be read: "Clean Your Room, Harvey Moon!" and "Now One Foot, Now the Other." One week will be devoted to each story. The third week will be devoted to selected titles for literature circles. The major project of the unit will be the creation of family albums. Students will create family pictures and write about them. The albums will be shared on the final day of the unit. Other assignments will include: writing about family events, discussing stories, and writing poems. Mini-lessons on grammar and writing will deal with noting details, writing poetry, identifying and defining verbs, and sequencing stories.

This unit was developed in consultation with and with the assistance of Alice Quist, my cooperating teacher at Lister; Deanna Eng, Title I teacher; Huon Kong, Title I/ESL teacher; Gail Bauer, paraeducator; Amy Wickstrom, second grade teacher; and Linda Devore, second grade teacher. Their advice and support was greatly appreciated.
