Lesson: Plants and Animals of Australia

Grade Level: Fourth

Purpose: This lesson will acquaint the students with the plants and animals native to Australia.

Goal: The students will name and briefly describe 5 animals native to Australia. The students will define and describe what a marsupial is. The students will identify five plants native to Australia.

Lesson Design: The students will work in groups of three. They will attempt to find out the required information from the following Internet sites: the Taronga Zoo of Sydney (http://www.zoo.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/nc/tz/tzoo-map.html), the Marsupial Museum (http://worldkids.net/critters/marsupials/), and the Australian National Botanical Gardens (http://www.anbg.gov.au/anbg/). The information that is found will be recorded onto worksheets and shared with the class.

Worksheet Sample Items:
What is a marsupial?
List five animals native to Australia and describe them in at least one sentence (size, what it eats, where it lives)
List five plants native to Australia and describe them in at least one sentence (flowers, height, where located)

Assessment: The worksheets will be collected to see if they are accurately completed and neat. They will be included in the mini-books.
