Welcome to THE POWWOW EDITIONS  by Ben Marra. For twenty-eight years, Marra has owned a commercial photography studio in the Pioneer Square area of Seattle, Washington. Working with many of the large and small corporations in the Northwest, he has provided images for their various architectural, industrial, product, and advertising needs.

Since 1988, Ben has also focused on a personal photography project which has taken him throughout the West documenting multi-tribal powwows with his camera. All photographs are taken on location where nothing in the image is altered or contrived to fit myths or stereotypes.

Powwows... great gatherings that celebrate the dances, drumming, and spirituality of the first inhabitants of this land. These celebrations enable Marra to gain access to a civilization that is rich in visual history. It is in this kind of setting, charged with energy and motion, that he captures the magnificent color and excitement distinctive to each dancer. It is here that he documents the shared cultural qualities that bind together the community of Native America.

Powwow book cover Ben Marra's book, POWWOW... Images along the Red Road, published by Harry N. Abrams, Inc., includes over 100 color photographs with narratives by the individuals. Avalanche Publishing has released a stunning 2003 calendar presenting thirteen new images entitled: Powwow: Portraits of Native Americans.

The four images included in this lithographic series are from one of the largest photo collections of today's Native America. Marra's moral agreement, with himself and with the people who pose for their portraits, is not to exploit them, but to show their pride and dignity. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of THE POWWOW EDITIONS  is shared with them.

The exceptional quality of the limited edition prints was achieved by incorporating waterless printing methods, a 250 line screen, and soy based inks on 120 lb. paper. This winning combination of excellent imagery and technology has created very strong color, high ink density, and ultra-fine detail. All prints are signed, numbered, and include a certificate of authenticity.

Each image edition is 1500 signed and numbered prints. The image size of each print is 16"x20" with a total size of 19"x23.5".

Retail Price: Unframed set of four: $550.00. Unframed individual print: $150.00. Both Visa and MasterCard are accepted.
