A note from
Mr. Ahlness:
This is a special “thank you” to all the news reporters who have done such a great job so far this year. Many
have put in extra time and have even missed recess!
In this edition, all of the stories were typed on computers by students. Special thanks to Hoa for helping with
the typing. Keep up the great reporting in 1997!

As you know we are having a Hoop Shoot Contest and Poster Contest. Congratulations to the people that made
it to the finals, and Good Luck.
In our class we are taking the Sanford test of basic skills. It is boring but easy.
On Feb. 1, 1997 9 of the 26 students are going to the Opera House to perform. We will be playing 11 different
songs. All the songs are based on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We will have to get up at 7:30, and we have
to be there by 8:30. We will be there from 9:00 to 10:00 and perform 9:00 to 10:00, and we will get free
tickets to the show after we perform.

The week before last week we had a substitute. His name is Mr. Randall. He works at the Seattle Science
Center. He is our favorite substitute because if we are good we can play Silent Ball. He is very nice to us.

Give up?
He was stuck to the chicken!
Lencho

We spent 2 weeks with an artist building a paper mache sculpture. It is made out of newspaper, chicken wire
and wood. It is called “Writing Student”.
It is 10 ½ feet tall and 77 inches round. He moves his hand like he is writing. It is unisex and it’s brown.
It is left handed and it takes 5 seconds for the arm to move up and down. Its birthday is Jan. 17, 1997.

The Party
by Kira
Three kids, Teddy, Lencho and Kira, were playing when Lencho said,”Let’s have
a party for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.”
“But who is going to come?” Said Teddy.”
“How about J.J, Margo,Taylor and Nick?” said Kira.
She got up and got four cards and four card envelopes and layed them on the floor. She wrote on the date,
time and where, she put the cards in the envelopes and mailed them.
Three days later on the day of the party only Taylor came. They waited for 10 minutes. Then Kira said,
”J.J, Nick and Margo are not here, so lets make a play.” So that’s what they did that day.

We spent two weeks building a dragon with Monad Elohim for the Dr. Martin
Luther King assembly. Two people from our class dedicated our dragon to Dr. Martin Luther King because
he was a brave, noble, and courageous man. In Vietnam the dragon stands for bravery, courage, and nobility.

An interview with
Ms. Bailey
By Bryan and Koriann
As you know, Ms. Bailey is our music teacher . We learned some things about her. She loves our school more
than any other one she’s been to . She likes every single one of the classes. For high school she went to
Evergreen. That’s by where most of you went swimming . She used to be on Broadway here in Seattle. That’s
the end .

We just got letter stamps for our work shop. We use the stamps to write words. We are reading, “Sing a
Sweet Song.” On Friday, January 24th we are taking a field trip to the Museum of Flight. Each day Mrs.
Ballard chooses four pictures of airplanes colored by the class for our “Air Flight” poster.
We are sorry that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. died. He changed the laws so that all people are treated
equally.
It was fun to play in the snow with my friends. Sledding down the hill was scary. I liked seeing my dad
on TV when we were out sledding.
New Year’s Resolutions:
- To spend more time with my dogs.
- To improve my diving.
- I promise to listen.
