Parent Bulletin

September 27, 2001

Dear Parents/Guardians,

The first weeks of school despite the tragic current events, have been very productive. In this time of crisis and uncertainty, it is important that parents, students and staff are assured of their current safety while recognizing and paying respects to all who perished in New York, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C.We have available to the entire school community, district counseling resources and an alert, caring staff. Please know that if you or your family members are in need of help, you need only to call the Main Office (933-5350) for information.

On Friday, September 14th, the Day of Prayer and Remembrance, the entire school paid tribute to those who were killed and injured with a moment of silence during the morning announcements.Michael Anderson, a 5th grader in Mr. Jordanís class then led the school in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Everyday, a different student assists me with the morning announcements by reading a historical fact occurring on that day. This is followed by the student leading the school in the pledge to the flag.Ironically, the history Michael read was that the 14th September is National Anthem Day commemorating the composing of the words to The Star Spangled Banner by Francis Scott Key.

Students, staff and parents have been wearing red, white and blue and adorning remembrance ribbons. The voices of children in music class filled the halls as they sang America the Beautiful. While we mourn the lives lost and the injuries sustained, we also celebrate the lives of those individuals and the freedoms we all enjoy as American citizens.

Let us all take time daily to give thanks for what we have in our families, our school and as citizens of the greatest country in the world.

Sincerely,

Carol A. Coram, Ed.D.

Principal

From the Nurse:

Student Health Screenings are scheduled for October 2nd and October 4th.†† During this time I will be checking each studentís hearing, sight, weight and height. On October 11th I will do scoliosis checks for the fifth grade students (permission slips will go home soon) in addition to their health screening. If you have questions please feel free to call me on Tuesdayís or Thursdays at 933-5350.Roxanne Springwater, school nurse.

From the Office:

Tuesday, October 2nd is National Walk Your Child to School Day.On Monday afternoon, October 1st, students who walk to school will receive stickers, pencils, bookmarks and/or reflectors to recognize and celebrate safety.Dr. Coram will have the items for distribution at dismissal time.

You and your child (whether you walk to school or not) might want to fill out the attached questionnaire on walking safely through the community. If you find things that need change in your neighborhood or around the school, this might be a good place to start creating an action plan.

Please turn in your completed questionnaire to your neighborhood association or the Arbor Heights Main Office if it applies to the school.

Thank you for your cooperation and input.

HIGHLY CAPABLE TESTING.The Seattle School District offers two programs for students who perform at very high levels on achievement and aptitude tests. To be tested and considered for the SPECTRUM or ACCELERATED PROGRESS PROGRAM (APP) next fall, a student must be nominated now.Nomination forms for students in kindergarten through seventh grade are available at school offices and Enrollment Service Centers. The deadline to have the nominations MUST be returned to our school office is Thursday, November 1, 2001.

School has just begun and our Lost and Found is already getting full. Please remind your children to check the closet across from the gym for their missing items.Items such as coats, sweaters, lunchboxes, etc. are boxed up on the 15th of each month and donated to a local charity that does not sell the clothes, but gives them to families in need.Unfortunately we do not have time to go through each item to return it to the child, it must be the responsibility of the family to check the Lost and Found Closet.

We are having a problem with students loitering in front of the school building after dismissal. It is important for all students to go home after school (unless they are in the YMCA Child Care program).Students that return after hours should play in the West playfield only, not in front of the office area where cars are parked. We will be calling homes to have children picked up if this continues to be a problem.
