[The water cooler - What Eastsiders are talking about - By Ann Garretson]

"What was your favorite class in school and why?"
(asked at the Eastgate Tully's on 09-09-99; published in the EJ on 09-12-99)

[pt.]Crystal McLeod, Barista, Kent

"Art class because you were learning and still having fun and being creative. You could goof off and have fun and work with your hands. I was a senior at Kentwood High School in Kent, and my teacher was Miss Jackson. We had interesting discussions, too. It was cool."

[pt.]Carol Goedde, Retired R.N., Bellevue

"My high school Home Ec. class -- my high school was in Preston, Idaho -- and my teacher was Mrs. Condie. She made it interesting, especially the cooking and the sewing. Good facts. Good cooking skills, too. She was able to teach and share. I think about it often."

[pt.]Shannon Gammon, Homemaker & Retired R.N., Bellevue
[blue rule]
"Forty years ago, in nurses' training -- a class on Anatomy and Physiology at St. Benedict's School of Nursing in Ogden, Utah. It was just very interesting and the teacher, Sister Estelle, was very knowledgeable. She was strict, but super intelligent. She really commanded your respect. And she was fun -- she'd smile and have a good time. Ultimately, everyone had the deepest, most profound respect for her."

[pt.]Hugh Shipman, Geologist, Seattle
[blue rule]
"Mr. Kollias' American history class at Brunswick High School in Brunswick, Maine. He was very distinctive which was part of what made it fun. He got people really excited about history. It wasn't just dates... He was a first-generation Greek immigrant, too -- I think that gave him a perspective that brought a lot more enthusiasm to teaching American history."

[pt.]Pearle Ravat, Health club sales, Bellevue
[blue rule]
"Music at Harold Cressy High School in Capetown, South Africa. Music was one of my loves and Professor Muller was an awesome teacher. He was very disciplined but he made music fun and therefore easy to learn."

[pt.]D.J. Esary, Distillery company sales rep., Bellevue
[blue rule]
"My 5th grade science class, because of the stars. That stuff intrigued me at the time. Still does. My teacher was Mr. Patkinson at Edison Elementary in Edison, Washington."
