"Are
you doing anything special to prepare for Y2K?"
(asked at the Bellevue
Regional Library on 08-18-99; published in the EJ on 08-22-99)
Erin Avery, Information assistant, Des Moines
"I know that people are panicking -- being in the library industry, I see it happen all the time -- asking for books on Y2K. For myself, I did do something that I didn't think I would do, but better safe than sorry! Instead of direct deposit, I'm getting my paycheck on payday. That's the only precaution I've taken."
Dave Chavez, Self-employed, Kent
"No, because I'm not afraid of the consequences. I think it's overblown. But if people are concerned about their finances, they should write those institutions and ask outright if they're prepared. I'm not motivated by fear. In fact, I'm interested in finding out what might happen."
Marcus Kauffman, Medical student, Charlottesville, VA
"No. It seems to me it's been over-played and I don't really know why. I think people have been preparing for it for a few years. I just don't see it affecting things I do as a student."
Travis Hoppes, Library page, Issaquah
"I don't think that it's going to be a big deal. I think people are over-reacting and that major companies and big businesses are going to be ready for it."
Art Fitzgerald, Library assistant, Bellevue
"Not really, because all of my computers at home are guaranteed to be Y2K-compliant. And at work here, we're all okay, too. And all the banks I deal with have said they're ready. And the federal government is 90% ready."
Eric Schmiedel, Seventh grader, Clyde Hill
"Actually, no. Not really. I have downloaded a few Y2K checking programs off the Internet. But I'm not really getting any extra food or loading up on water... Maybe there'll be a power outage but no raging mobs with guns blazing in the street."
