"What
were the best and worst vacations you ever had?"
(asked at Crossroads
Shopping Center on 06-09-99; published in the EJ on 06-13-99)
Bogie Dzieciatkowski, Telecommunications customer service, Bellevue
"The best -- San Diego. I used to live there and went back. The people, and the sun. The worst? I went camping once and it ended up raining. We got stuck in the tent with rain pouring down on us. So we ended up sleeping in the car."
Brian Davis, Travel agent, Seattle
"I've had several really good vacations, interesting destinations -- Egypt, Scotland, the Disney cruise -- so it's hard to say. I put them together so the right things were in place. The worst vacation was when I was a child, camping on the Oregon coast for a week. It rained six days out of seven. It was probably the worst vacation for my parents, too."
Tirzah Kerr, Student & checker, Bellevue
"The best would be a two-week, cross-country trip in a camper with my family when I was nine. Being able to see so many different things. We drove from Seattle to Mt. Rushmore and back. The worst -- the only one I can think of is when we went to California and our dog died while we were gone. I was in first grade or something. It was pretty heart-breaking."
Charles Lapp, Property manager, Redmond
"I think the best vacations are the ones you take with your family and friends. I wouldn't want to rank-order my vacations because if you have your family and friends with you, they're all the best. I've never had a bad vacation. The worst day of vacation is better than the best day of not being on vacation."
Peggy Auyeung, Marketing, Bellevue
"The best one was 10 years ago, when I was in Europe for the first time, after I had graduated from university. I was with my girlfriend and we backpacked for 30 days. The worst was when I was on a boat from Victoria to Vancouver and we didn't realize the line was so long so we had to go on the next boat and got home really late. It wasn't so much a bad vacation as a bad moment."
Don Hall, Writer, Redmond
"The best 'vacation' was in the South China Sea in Vietnam, prior to the Tet Offensive in '68. I was in F Company, 51st Long Range Patrol, ABN -- trained by the Special Forces. Being with those guys was the best. They were on my team. The worst -- the work."
