[The water cooler - What Eastsiders are talking about - By Ann Garretson]

"When did you know your spouse was 'the one'?"
(asked at Crossroads Shopping Center on 03-10-99; published in the EJ on 03-14-99)

[pt.]Ken Goven, Retired, Bellevue

"My sister used to borrow my car and she'd bring Dorothy around and dangle her like bait. After a year or more, we got married. What Dorothy did is, she took me from my mother's apron strings (laughs)... We've been married 58 years! What I love most about her is that she's a good cook, and she looks after me."

"It was in 1939 -- no, 1940. It's been so long, it's hard to remember! It seems like yesterday. In one way, it's a long time, in another way, life goes by pretty fast... I love most that he's home now. The most important thing about marriage? Keeping a good sense of humor."

[pt.]Susan Sasouvanh, Property management, Bellevue

"It was the second time we met. It was a business contact, in my office, his follow-up routine. But I had behind-the-head thoughts, a shy crush. It was 'Wow! Look at him!' It was a big surprise, and the feeling enhances as time goes by. If people feel that way, they shouldn't keep it a secret because look at the outcome: we're engaged!"

[pt.]David Johann, Security marketing, Bellevue

"It was after walking in her office and seeing how she lit up. And talking on the phone, and the fact the phone calls were every single day when they didn't have to be. And a few of the things said hit hot spots -- I couldn't really say how. It kind of blew me away."

[pt.]Julie Lang, Wedding coordinator, North Bend
[blue rule]
"We'd been friends since seventh grade and started to date in college... Then three months into that relationship -- it was on the day of his baptism, after the actual baptism, at his Mom and Dad's house. I was sitting in a chair and all of a sudden I looked at him totally differently. It felt scary because I never thought I would think of him as more than a friend... Our baby, Rebekah, was born a year ago last Thursday."

[pt.]Michael Lang, Network engineer, North Bend
[blue rule]
"Probably three months after she did, after she showed so much interest. She was kind of pushing forward and I didn't mind. Before, I didn't think she was interested at all... There was a New Year's Eve -- she came up to my folks' place -- that's the time I first really thought about it."
