[The water cooler - What Eastsiders are talking about - By Ann Garretson]

"What do you do to keep your spirits up with all the rain?"
(asked at the Juanita Starbucks on 03-04-99; published in the EJ on 03-07-99)

[pt.]Rollin Hurd, Retired dentist, Kirkland
[blue rule]
"The rain doesn't bother me all that much -- I was born and raised in Hoquiam, Washington. I like rain better than having sun every day. But when it goes on this long, it starts to get to me a little. Starbucks helps. Maybe seeing a movie. Reading."

[pt.]Kristie Berg, Waitress, Kirkland
[blue rule]
"I'm kind of different because I like running -- jogging, walking, exercising -- in the rain, as opposed to when it's nice outside. The rain gets to me sometimes, but not as much as I think it gets to my friends and co-workers. But I also just moved here. Give it a few years."

[pt.]Jacquie Stoll, Retired, Bothell
[blue rule]
"I paint. I do watercolor -- landscapes and water. Painting keeps my mind off of the rain. But I'm a native and I'm used to a certain amount of greyness anyway, so I don't mind a lot of it. I have other ways of coping with it, too. I play bridge, read, exercise, walk when I can. I keep busy. Keeping busy is the best."

[pt.]Collen Marquist, Rock shop co-owner, Kirkland
[blue rule]
"I walk a lot. Even if it's raining, I get out and walk. I think it might be the endorphins. And my husband and I just went to Arizona for six weeks so we missed a lot of the rain. ... And I have a SADD light which I haven't used this year but I used it last year. It really works. I highly recommend it."

[pt.]Arlene Giesmann, Retired P.R., Kirkland
[blue rule]
"I leave town. I just came back from Vegas and I'm heading for Phoenix, and then Sarasota, Florida. I moved here from sunny Alameda, California because my daughter and grandchildren are here. Since I came up here, I have e-mailed my friends to tell them I am either growing moss or building an ark."

[pt.]Jim Ilika, Mental health professional, Bothell
[blue rule]
"The rain really doesn't bother me. I like it here. I'm from Minnesota and this is so much better than snow and sub-zero weather. This is a great place to live."
