[The water cooler - What Eastsiders are talking about - By Ann Garretson]

"What's the best gift you ever gave or got on Valentine's Day?"
(asked at Crossroads Shopping Center on 02-11-99; published in the EJ on 02-14-99)

"I give flowers, usually. I don't keep Valentine's Day as a big holiday. It's a very minor holiday. I intend to buy some flowers at Safeway or something."

[pt.]Ruthie Cornilles, Travel consultant, Issaquah
[blue rule]
"The best I ever gave -- I made a reservation for my husband and myself at the Hotel Monaco in downtown Seattle. It's new, and it's so beautiful. We've been to Monaco and the hotel is so like the country. Inside of the rooms, it's all Mediterranean and French furniture. And the restaurant in the hotel is to die for! It really makes you want to be with each other."

[pt.]Maureen Cooke, Travel consultant, Redmond

"I'd always wanted a heart-shaped box of candy and when I was 28 and my husband and I were dating, he gave me one. From See's. Boyfriends always gave me flowers and candy, but not candy in a heart-shaped box. That's what I give my grandkids now -- heart-shaped boxes of candy."

[pt.]Mally Soofi, Customer Service, Bellevue
[blue rule]
"Last year on Valentine's Day, my husband asked me to get married to him -- he gave me a wedding ring and everything! For our anniversary this year, we're going to Italy. It'll be our first time there."

[pt.]Clay Styles, Carpentry, Bellevue
[blue rule]
"A hotel room and a ski lift ticket at Crystal Mountain. That's what I got and it's the best because Danna knew that's what I liked to do. The best one I ever gave was a night at the Four Seasons Olympic Hotel and dinner out."

[pt.]Michaele Muse, Mayor, Kirkland
[blue rule]
"I'm married to a romantic so we have Valentine's Day all year round. We celebrate with 'pillow presents' for no special reason -- for all special reasons. Anything from a bar of soap with Mickey Mouse in the middle of it to gold earrings. And we just celebrated our 31st anniversary so pillow presents work!"
