[The water cooler - What Eastsiders are talking about - By Ann Garretson]

"Are you worried about the Y2K problem?"
(asked at the Bellevue Regional Library on 01-06-99; published in the EJ on 01-10-99)

[pt.]Todd Harris, Regional sales manager, Snohomish
[blue rule]
"Not particularly. I don't think it's going to be as big of a problem as some people make out. I think there'll be problems but not to the extent some people feel."

[pt.]Art Wallenstein, Jail administrator, Issaquah
[blue rule]
"An intriguing technological issue -- and we will all have to wait and see if it materializes... We've had a team working on it for over a year. We did our first major conversion to Y2000 last Sunday night so that jail records would reflect the year 2000. It worked due to truly dedicated staff involvement, and the few bugs that exist will be cleaned up over the next few months."

[pt.]Jon-Paul Ward, Information Technology Services (ITS) professional, Seattle
[blue rule]
"There's no such thing as a Y2K problem because if you're not compliant, you're out of business and you then won't have a Y2K problem... I'm not worried about it because I work in the field and Y2K is just another opportunity."

[pt.]Luisa Ruiz, College student, Bellevue
[blue rule]
"I'm not worried because I think people have been preparing since they knew about it. It's just for people who have computers and stuff."

[pt.]D.J. Dussault, Massage student, Bellevue
[blue rule]
"Personally I don't like computers too much -- I get along better with pen and paper. In some ways I think it's a scam, sort of, because you have to buy new computers. It seems like they could've figured out some way to fix it some time ago."

[pt.]Jordan Jobe, High school senior, Redmond
[blue rule]
"I don't think I'm too worried because it's inconceivable it could ruin the entire country in just one year."
