[The water cooler - What Eastsiders are talking about - By Ann Garretson]

"Do you forgive Bill Clinton?"
(asked at the Bellevue Regional Library on 09-09-98; published in the EJ on 09-13-98)

[pt.]Kathy Dawson, Entrepreneur, Bellevue
[blue rule]
"Don't even go there. That's opening up a can of worms. It's up to Hillary to do that, not me. They're there for life -- she'll stick with him, for good or bad. Those were the marriage vows, weren't they?"

[pt.]Keith Savage, Program manager, Newcastle
[blue rule]
"It's not for me to forgive what he did to his wife and family. But it's hard for me to forgive the damage he's done to the Office of the President."

[pt.]Eileen Hallstrom, Housewife, Maple Valley
[blue rule]
"I don't think he needs my forgiveness. I don't think his private life is any of my business, or any of our concern. I think it's media playing to what someone thinks the public might want -- whether he looks apologetic enough, pretends to be sorry enough, answers questions to some degree of detail."

[pt.]Bill Levings, Consultant, Issaquah
[blue rule]
"Yes, but he has to be held accountable for what he's done, and take responsibility. There always has to be accountability -- to the country, his wife, his child, his friends, his party... I'm not sure he will be held accountable. It's tough for our country to hold our political leaders accountable for their actions."

[pt.]Dick Brening, Retired manager, Bellevue
[blue rule]
"No, I don't. I think it's the moral issue more than anything else. You really don't know what to think. There's probably good reason to believe he's not a very moral person... I think he should resign -- I think it's that important. But I don't think he will."

[pt.]Kim Fischer, Registered nurse, Redmond
[blue rule]
"He's not asked me. It didn't seem like he was asking me. If he did ask, I would. Sure. I've been forgiven before."
