[The water cooler - What Eastsiders are talking about - By Ann Garretson]

"What's most on your mind these days?"
(asked outside the Kirkland Library on 08-05-98; published in the EJ on 08-09-98)

[pt.]Joe Clare, Geotechnical engineer, Seattle
[blue rule]
"Being out of the city, on the water, in the mountains. Less work, more fun... On Kauia -- the easy way of life. Less rush, no crowds, empty beaches... Or I'd be out on the lake waterskiing in the mornings."

[pt.]Cristina (Aluas) Falkner, Pharmacy technician, Kirkland
[blue rule]
"A boyfriend, Florin Alberto Negru, that I had and I can't get in touch with him. I'm from Romania and the last we spoke was on December 3, 1989. At the end of December, 1989, at the end of the revolution, he wrote me in Bucharest. He lived in another part of Romania and I never got a chance to talk to him... Now, I'm a U.S. citizen and I really want to continue our friendship."

[pt.]Deena Chauhan, 10th grader, Kirkland
[blue rule]
"I'm on school holiday, so mainly just having fun, getting a break from school. And at the same time, reading books to keep up with spelling."

[pt.]Manisha Chauhan, 7th grader, Kirkland
[blue rule]
"Going shopping at Bellevue Square, and Fred Meyer. But mom said that I have to study at the library. And I won two prizes this far in the "Summer Spectacular," where you read a book and fill in a form. They choose five names and the winners get to choose books to keep. I picked "The Armageddon," the book of the movie, and I got a "Godzilla" book."

[pt.]Simonne Horman, 4th grader, Kirkland
[blue rule]
"Beanie Babies! My favorite is "Carrots" -- it's a Pillow Pal but it's still a Ty. I want the new Beanie Baby called "Glory" -- it's a bear that has stars all over it. It's a little one, but it's $65. It's brand new."

[pt.]Madhu Chauhan, Accounts payable, Kirkland
[blue rule]
"Spending money. I like the shops. And the jewelry. And I love Costco. Fred Meyer. Kmart. We're from Australia, from Sydney, and we don't have things like that at home -- bigger shops, malls. I just wish the weather was hot 12 months, is all."
