[The water cooler - What Eastsiders are talking about - By Ann Garretson]

"Should Monica Lewinsky have been granted immunity?"
(asked at Crossroads Shopping Center on 07-29-98; published in the EJ on 08-02-98)

[pt.]Michelle Su, Student, Bellevue
[blue rule]
"I don't think I know enough about the immunity -- but I'd say yes, to get her to say everything... I think this has been blown out of proportion. But I think the one good thing that's coming out of it is a lot of legal precedent concerning the president, concerning his responsibilities."

[pt.]Chris Hegge, Self-employed, Bellevue
[blue rule]
"No, I think she should just be treated as any other citizen of the U.S. My opinion is more toward the president than toward her. It appears that the president definitely has lied about the situation, and it concerns me that he would lie about other issues."

[pt.]Wally Gibson, Meatcutter, Maple Valley
[blue rule]
"No. If she did something wrong, she can avoid it that way. I don't think anyone should be granted immunity. I think the whole thing is a big waste of taxpayers' money, myself. I think the president has done a great job and if he wants a girlfriend, he can have one. He's not the first president who's had a girlfriend."

[pt.]Brett Bowman, Financial analyst, Edmonds
[blue rule]
"Yes, because if it turns out she's telling the truth, and the president may not have the same story, she'd be in a very difficult position. It's the only way to get a focused, detailed answer."

[pt.]John Peters, Sales, Bellevue
[blue rule]
"From my knowledge of it -- no, I don't think so. She's got a story to tell about something that a lot of people think is pretty important, and I think she should just tell the story because nobody knows anything so far."

[pt.]Naomi Smith, Student, Seattle
[blue rule]
"Yes. Because I think that she deserves the freedom of testimony without being inhibited by a fear of getting in trouble or ruining her career. I think that the basic matter is to see if the president did anything unlawful and without her testimony, we'd never get to the bottom of the case."
