"How do
you beat the heat?"
(asked at the Bellevue
Transit Center on 07-22-98; published in the EJ on 07-26-98)
Ron Desjardins, Transit operator, Fall City
"I beat the heat by going to a sink and dousing my head with cold water. I comb it through, let it drip-dry. It acts as a natural air conditioner. And I wear shorts and short sleeves."
Erica Healy, University senior & part-time intern, Bellevue
"I lay out in the pool. Or I sit under trees when I try to stay out of the sun. I don't like the humidity, but I like the heat."
Rasheda Capers, Janitor, Bellevue
"I stay in the house with fans. And I fan myself with paper. And I drink a lot of water."
Sarah Greenwood, Barista, Bellevue
"I drink lots of water and iced coffee. The sun doesn't hit my house so it's always cool -- I can't wait to get home."
Monica McAllister-Day, Stay-at-home mom, Bellevue
"We have air conditioning in the car and in the house and I definitely need to beat the heat -- I'm eight months pregnant! At home, I also have two fans going at all times. I've become a weather wimp since we moved to Seattle from California six years ago."
Gage Hudson, Loan originator, Mill Creek
"I take an ice-cold shower and we have a couple of fans and we sit with a bucket of beer. Cold showers, fans, Coors Light -- that's about all you need. That, and the remote control."
