"What
do you think of Kirkland's decision to ban fireworks in
1999?"
(asked at the Kirkland
Library on 02-25-98; published in the EJ on 03-01-98)
Karen Clausen, Registered nurse, Kirkland
"I think it's great because I dislike the noise and the danger of fireworks when kids get into it. I like fireworks when they're organized, like when they're at Gasworks Park."
Robert Bickers, Concrete contractor, Kirkland
"I'm all for pyrotechnics because they're fun. I think the fire hazards are probably a lot more hyped than not. The danger is over-played. To just totally ban them -- if anything, they should allow them between Waverly and Marina parks because that's just a big open point."
Michelle Funk, Associate editor, Issaquah
"I'm in favor of that. I think the show Seattle puts on is enough of a celebration. I think when people do their own fireworks, it's too much of a hazard. Children are likely to hurt themselves or others, even with supervision."
Don Hart, Masters student, Kirkland
"Any time the government says "no," I look at how many people it will take to enforce that "no"... All in all, I think it's a bit silly."
Maria Zurawski, Retail, Kirkland
"I think that it's a mistake. It's an annual American pastime -- and it's a tradition to celebrate freedom in America. Banning them will obviously not give us that freedom."
Steve Boyd, Library assistant, Kirkland
"I think it would be good so long as they have a public display for the kids. Taking that away wouldn't be fair to the children. As an adult, it's more fun watching the big displays."
