"If
diplomacy fails, should the U.S. attack Iraq?"
(asked at the Bellevue
Transit Center on 02-19-98; published in the EJ on 02-22-98)
Erik Iness, Barista, bartender & student, Seattle
"I think we should crush Iraq. It's sad for the people of Iraq but they don't have the power to move out of the country or overthrow Saddam. Tragic things do have to occur and that entitles bombardment to the fullest. 'Pull a Godzilla' and just smash them. Saddam Hussein is a sick man."
Ian Nelson-Roehl, 7th grader, Seattle
"I don't know but I don't think so. It just seems unnecessary... I haven't really heard much about it, either -- it's not talked about much."
Elaine Jefferson, Senior technical writer, Seattle
"Yes. Why not? They've threatened world peace -- they're known terrorists. The time's up. Diplomacy already failed. He does not heed U.N. guidelines. There's a whole bunch of veterans suffering from the effects of his terrorism in the Gulf War. I don't think we need any more people suffering."
Rick Gatter, Transit operator, Kirkland
"Oh, yeah. I think we ought to take it out because I don't think diplomacy is going to work with him -- you can't reason with a crazy man. If it hadn't been for the U.N. mandate to just free Kuwait in Desert Storm, we should've gone in and taken Baghdad out right then. Even Schwartzkopf said that."
Nicholas Valenzuela, Student & package handler, Redmond
"Yes, we should, if that's the only alternative that's left. Actually diplomacy has failed since the beginning seven years ago when it began. They should have finished it all at once."
Marta Nobrega, Veterinarian, Bellevue
"No. I think they shouldn't because I believe a U.S. attack on Iraq isn't really because of what Saddam does -- it's a political issue. In Brazil where I come from, every time the U.S. attacks Iraq, we think it's to get the gas prices up."
