"What's
your favorite Winter Olympics event?"
(asked at Crossroads
Shopping Center on 02-11-98; published in the EJ on 02-15-98)
Kim Smith, Retail manager, Redmond
"Ice skating. I like the personalities of the skaters, the music, the performances. I really like Lu Chen. She's been a hopeful and was overshadowed last time, but this year she's there!"
Nancy Novak, Insurance rep., Woodinville
"Probably the skating because of the variety of music, and the skill. My favorite is Michelle Kwan -- she's so cute and she works so hard and yet seems so relaxed on camera. She seems like someone I'd like to meet. And she's not afraid to admit when she screws up. She just starts over again."
Jeff Jakobsen, Barista, Kirkland
"The downhill. I've always liked skiing. My dad's a Seattle policeman and they have a ski club and I've gone up skiing a couple of times. I like it. I tune into most of the events to see how the U.S. is doing. But I follow all of the skiing events."
Al Strand, Construction manager, Bothell
"Ice skating. It's graceful. They can do everything that ballet dancers wish they could do... But I think CBS has overdone the cultural emphasis. When we had the Olympics at Lillehammer, we didn't learn how to make lutefisk or milk a reindeer. It is after all a sporting event, not a soap opera."
Tearsa Shull, Student & homemaker, Redmond
"Probably figure skating because it's fluid and graceful and requires a lot of athletic ability... If they're on, I watch -- if I have time."
Bulent Aki, Restaurant owner, Renton
"Skiing. Downhill skiing. Because I ski also and I like it. I like the speed and the control. And there's one American skier from Alaska, Jonny Mosely -- he just got the gold. I like his technique. He's a really strong person."
