[The water cooler - What Eastsiders are talking about - By Ann Garretson]

"What news topic are you following most closely these days?"
(asked at Pedrola's Espresso in Juanita on 02-05-98; published in the EJ on 02-08-98)

[pt.]Vikki Strahan, Barista, Everett

"I guess it would have to be news topics about our environment. Not El Nino, but about our clean water and clean air. Commercial pollution worries me. I just don't think enough people are educated on what actual pollutants are."

[pt.]Cherie Stone, Credit manager, Everett

"Actually, I was just listening on the radio about the "One Strike, You're Out" bill about child molesters. It's got some good points, but I think they need to refine it about the age of the abuser -- there's no age limit on it. I think there probably should be."

[pt.]Carole Worland, Barista, Bothell
[blue rule]
"The president. And LeTourneau. Probably the president most of all. He's on the cover of every publication. It isn't really clear to me that he's guilty and I really think he's done a great job as president. The thing that bothers me most is the lack of respect from every other country over this. It's so damaging."

[pt.]Norma Stryzewski, Hairdresser, Kirkland
[blue rule]
"I wish they'd stop talking about Clinton and focus on Hillary. I think she's really the one that's causing the president to make the decisions he makes."

[pt.]Scott McCall, Plumber, Mill Valley
[blue rule]
"I am interested in Iraq and the fact it could lead to World War III if we aren't careful... And I am interested in this thing with Italy -- where a marine flier clipped a gondola cable and people were killed. I think this tragedy deserved more than a footnote on the evening news. It might lead to our losing all of our military bases in Italy."

[pt.]Ron Clarke, Semi-retired & former lobbyist, Kirkland
[blue rule]
"Iraq. No doubt about it. It's the only thing that's important that's going on. What troubles me is that the countries of the U.N. are not willing to stand behind the sanctions -- they're giving the wrong message. Did they mean what they say when they said there shall be no restrictions on the inspections? I think they need to back up what they said they'd do."
