[The water cooler - What Eastsiders are talking about - By Ann Garretson]

"Do you plan on getting a flu shot this year?"
(asked at Crossroads Shopping Center on 10-09-97; published in the EJ on 10-12-97)

[pt.]Kerry Herndon, Bookseller/buyer, Seattle
[blue rule]
"Probably not. I just usually get colds. I don't really get the flu that often, only colds that might keep me home for a day or two. I don't get too concerned about flu because where I work, we pass little colds around all the time. Nothing ever gets serious."

[pt.]James Crates, Book buyer, Seattle
[blue rule]
"No, I'm not planning on getting a flu shot. It's tradition -- I never get one. I rarely get the flu. Once every ten years. So I just don't see a need to get a flu shot."

[pt.]Nancy Alford, Real estate, Bellevue
[blue rule]
"No. I never have. Maybe I'll see a need for it when I'm older, but not now. For the high-risk groups, yes. But I don't fall into those."

[pt.]Patti Domas, Family manager, Bellevue
[blue rule]
"Yes. I just think it's a good idea. I've had one before and I think it makes sense. I've read a lot about the pros and cons and I think there are more favorable benefits."

[pt.]Mike Woodbury, Coin & stamp store owner, Kirkland
[blue rule]
"No, generally because I feel I'm pretty healthy, and I keep active and try to take care of myself. And generally, because I'm rarely in crowds. I did get one once, a couple of years ago, during that big scare about that big flu coming around. I'm too busy to get sick."

[pt.]Betty Stevens, Industrial sales, Kirkland
[blue rule]
"I already have. The truth is, I never had one before. And I just decided I didn't want the flu this year. I have no idea if they work. It was amazingly fast and painless. Nobody likes shots, but this was just 'zap'!"
