"Do you
think Ken Griffey Jr. will break Roger Maris's home run
record?"
(asked at Crossroads
Shopping Center on 09-17-97; published in the EJ on 09-21-97)
Steve Chien, Computer programmer, Redmond
"Close, but not this year. I just moved out here from Boston, but I follow baseball... . I think maybe, but unlikely -- nine home runs in 11 games is a lot. Actually, my hero is Cal Ripken because I'm from Maryland."
Jason Barile, Software engineer, Redmond
"I don't know. From what I know about him, he's probably got a very good chance. I'm more of a hockey fan -- I just moved here from Tennessee and we don't have a baseball team. I'd like to start following the Mariners."
Matt Jaffe, College sophomore, Redmond
"Not this year. But with the way Griffey swings, he could hit 70 any time he wants to. But that slowdown in July -- where he only hit one home run -- otherwise, he'd be right at the record right now. I would not be surprised if he breaks the record next year, or the year after that. If he stays healthy, he'll break Hank Aaron's career home run record."
Catherine Hall, Broadcasting, Seattle
"No. He's too young. I don't want him to just yet. And I don't think he will because it's too short a time. My heart wants him to succeed, but he should have to work a little for it."
Erin Verginia, Full-time mom, Bellevue
"I definitely think he will. I think he hit three home runs in the last two games. With his average, yeah, he'll get it."
Tom Sartor, Production, Kenmore
"If he concentrates, he can do it. He has a problem with concentrating. If you go back to July, he was upset about travelling to play a game in North Carolina... . But he's got the talent, no doubt about it. He's got more talent than you can shake a bat at."
