[The water cooler - What Eastsiders are talking about - By Ann Garretson]

"What's the best movie you've seen this summer?"
(asked at Seattle's Best Coffee, Kirkland, on 07-30-97; published in the EJ on 08-03-97)

[pt.]Shannon Doran, College senior & café supervisor, Kirkland
[blue rule]
"Contact, with Jodie Foster and Matthew McConaughey, was the best. It was thought-provoking -- it dealt a lot with religion and technology and I think those are two issues we're all dealing with right now. I found the way it handled them fulfilling -- it made me think."

[pt.]Melissa Zielinski, College sophomore & barista, Kirkland
[blue rule]
"Face/Off, with John Travolta and Nicholas Cage. I love John Travolta. And he pulled off being so scary, so calculating, so evil-minded, so smooth and calm. The plot is so far-out but they pulled it off. You think it could really happen."

[pt.]Amy Mariano, Home health care CNA, Redmond
[blue rule]
"Air Force One with Harrison Ford. He made it the best -- he's just a really good actor. I didn't think he'd be good as the president and then when I saw it, he was amazing. He played everything down. The plot, the action in it, is just really good. And this one was not predictable."

[pt.]Les Ostermeier, Senior housing & care options advisor, Woodinville
[blue rule]
"The only movie I've seen is Men in Black. I liked the special effects. I liked also that there was a lot of humor so it wasn't as serious and not the same format as many sci-fi movies. I was entertained."

[pt.]Michael Patterson, Wireless communication business owner, Renton
[blue rule]
"Face/Off -- that's the best one I've seen. I love Nicholas Cage. I think he's a great actor. And John Travolta -- I think that was the best movie I've seen him in lately. He does very well in the action movies and this had some incredible shots and action scenes. I walked out of the movie very satisfied."

[pt.]Ed Serrin, Retired, Hot Springs MT
[blue rule]
"I really enjoyed Addicted to Love with Matthew Broderick and Meg Ryan. I thought the twist was kind of interesting. And there wasn't a lot of sex or violence. Well, a little sex, but it wasn't the main thing. I only went because that movie was the best of the three at the theatre."
