[The water cooler - What Eastsiders are talking about - By Ann Garretson]

"What's your favorite memory of your mom?"
(asked at Factoria Mall on 05-07-97; published in the EJ on 05-11-97)

"I'm a twin and I have happy memories of my mom playing with us... My happiest memory is when I was actually a grown-up -- going on walks with my mom and being an adult with her."

"There are too many of them, I think. Oh, making bread. She was a good baker. She did her own chocolate-covered, coconut Easter eggs, too. Nothing fancy-decorated, just good home cooking. I did a lot of the cooking and I still do a lot. Not as much baking, but I still lick the beaters."

[pt.] Marianne O'Reilly, Customer service, Renton

"Pork roast and dumplings... It's been five years since she passed away -- I miss her always being there, I miss being able to pick up the phone and talk with my friend... On Mother's Day, every mother should be recognized for the things that they do. Mother's Day is a day to celebrate, whether they're mothers or not, or whether they have mothers."

[pt.] Moira Ashmore, Mom and housewife, Everett

"Learning how to cook with my mom. Linguine and clam sauce. Now, my kids love it. And a lot of baking. Pumpkin cake is my special recipe. Actually, it's from her mom, my grandma... I also remember when moms made you clean up your room and do things you didn't want to. Now, as a mom -- I have four kids -- I know you're supposed to do those things because they help you become a better person."

"She baked my sister's cake at her wedding. It was pretty good -- it was nice... She used to make Snickerdoodles when I was a kid and that was fun. And she used to make pizza every Friday night. Sometimes she'd let us help and that was fun, too."

"I think my best memory is when I was seven and fell out of a tree and smashed myself up really badly. I remember seeing mom walking over the hill, already knowing what happened. And she picked me up and took care of me. I didn't have to cry out or anything -- she was watching me. She knew where I was... I think I'm guilty for too many of my mother's grey hairs."
