Today's Issue
By Ann Garretson
"What's the most important race or issue on Tuesday's ballot?"
(asked at Crossroads Shopping Center on 11-02-95; published in the JA on 11-05-95)
Kristin Gauthier, Student & salesperson, Redmond
"I don't know -- I never registered to vote. I never really paid much attention or have really gotten into it. I've been planning on it, but I've been really busy with school and work... But I am kind of sick of everyone putting each other down. They should be putting themselves up and ignoring the rest."
Tim Bodin, Software engineer, Newcastle
"I haven't studied the Voter's Pamphlet enough to really make a decision on it. I'd say, for the most part, that they're all important. I'll review the pamphlet again before I vote on Tuesday."
Richard Grant, Sales representative, Bothell
"I wasn't planning on voting. I've been sort of caught up in my own world... It's important -- there definitely needs to be people to run the city, the country... I suppose I should pay more attention because it's the responsibility of a citizen. And then I can complain when something goes wrong."
Joy O'Rourke, Business owner, North Bend
"I'm not aware of any that stick out. I'm planning on voting -- I've got the Voter's Pamphlet at home and I'll bone up on it. That's my job for this weekend."
Mike O'Rourke, Mortgage banker, North Bend
"The only thing I've gotten at all involved in is the fishing rights issue and it makes no sense to me at all. The ads I've seen about it on TV are extremely thin -- no information. I need to read up on it and hopefully the Voter's Pamphlet will tell me more... There just doesn't seem to be a lot of info about the election. There's the pamphlet, but even that doesn't go into enough depth."
Doug McLaughlin, Firefighter/paramedic, Bellevue
"I think it's probably the one having to do with property rights and compensation. I think it's a big issue and has distinct repercussions for many people on the Eastside. There still seems to be a lot of bantering back and forth about it from one side to the other. I'm still a little bit undecided so I need to sit down and re-read the info. It's hard to know five years into the future which way is the right way to go... Otherwise, you have the same rhetoric among candidates."
