By Ann Garretson
"Have you caught 'Mariners fever'?"
(asked at Crossroads Shopping Center on 10-13-95; published in the JA on 10-15-95)
Juliet Jones, Law student, Tacoma
"Yes. I'm new to this area and wasn't into baseball. But I go to law school and everyone's really into it, so I've gotten into it, too. I've watched more baseball in the last week than I have in my entire life! I'm from North Carolina and they don't have a major league baseball team. The last game I saw was eight years ago -- the Durham Bulls. "Bull Durham", the movie, was named after them."
Joby Johnson, Deputy sheriff, Sedro Woolley
"Yes. I've caught every game of the playoffs except the last one. The best one was probably the last New York game -- it went right down to the wire... Randy Johnson is my favorite player because he's so intense."
Thelma Avey, Volunteer, Bellevue
"Yes. You know, I have never watched baseball. I watch football, especially the Huskies, but now I'm watching baseball every night. I can't tear myself away from the TV! I haven't any favorite players, really. I think they're all wonderful. And I do like Ken Griffey Jr. -- I like the way he looks, his expressions."
Jim Massey, Computer services, Shoreline
"I've been a Mariners fan for about 19 years, even in the painful years, so I think it's good that baseball is catching on -- the sheer excitement of the events. Even my wife listens to it on the radio, and she's never done that before! My fear is that they'll go to the World Series and hang the pennant in Virginia... If we don't do something about the stadium, we'll lose them."
Sergei Boiarkin, 7th grader, Redmond
"No. I don't really like baseball. I don't care much. I think it's good that they're winning, but I kind of ignore it. I like soccer and basketball better."
Ebony Corbin, High school student and employee, Redmond
"No. I'm not really into it that much. I'm in school and I have two jobs and I don't have time. I hear about it from my friends, though, and I felt sorry for them when they lost the second game to Cleveland... A lot of my friends work and we catch the score the next day."
