Today's Issue
By Ann Garretson
"Have you surfed the Internet?"
(asked at Crossroads Shopping Center on 10-05-95; published in the JA on 10-08-95)
Sandy Westermayer, Rancher and former engineer, Ellensburg
"Absolutely not, and I have no intention to. I don't want to live in a TV or a computer. There's more to life, in my opinion. The world's full of computers and garbage and all of it makes no difference -- it doesn't contribute a thing to the quality of life... I don't even own a VCR!"
Rosanne Anderson, Production coordinator, Bothell
"No. I don't have a modem and the capability to connect to the Internet at home. But I think there has to be a way to control some of the things on it. There's a lot of potential access to different forms of entertainment that aren't acceptable -- things I don't want my children to see... I'd like to get a modem in the next year, but I'd like to see the guidelines before I have the Internet in my home."
Gene Parks, Chef, Kirkland
"No. I probably will. I'm from Missouri and I sold my computer before I got here. I've watched other people on the Internet, and at some point in time I will be. I think it's important because the communication isn't hampered by any government. And it's just so instantaneous. It's freedom of information."
Rick Drottz, Property manager, Bellevue
"No. I plan on it but not yet because I don't use a computer at work and at home I don't have access to the Internet... I think it's just another informational resource. It's not going to be revolutionizing my life."
Derek Smith, Software engineer, Redmond
"No. I will. Maybe. I get e-mail from there. E-mail is another way to communicate. I've gone to parties arranged entirely by e-mail... I'd like to know more about the Web -- the more interactive stuff."
Lara Sobel, Graphic artist, Kirkland
"A little bit -- the World-Wide Web. It's okay. I use AOL a lot and they have a Web browser. I use AOL more than the Web because it's really good for e-mail. I write letters to people I ordinarily wouldn't write to as much. And once, I needed some medical advice and got some free advice from surgeons... I think it's a good thing."
