By Ann Garretson
"Do you believe that there is intelligent life elsewhere in the universe?"
(asked at Crossroads Shopping Center on 06-27-96; published in the JA on 06-30-96)
David Pounds, Sales associate, Bellevue
"Yes, I do, because I don't believe there can be that much space out there and nothing else out there... I'm from Portland and a year or two ago, there was an area with strange markings in the field by my school. They couldn't explain it -- they called it a 'so-called UFO landing'. I believed it -- I saw the tracks."
Bryan Cook, Account representative, Bellevue
"No, I don't. I believe there's life out there but not on the scale of human beings. This is not so much a religious belief as it is from everything I've read, science-wise. I don't believe there's anything we can relate to one-on-one."
Joshua Campbell, Editor, Arlington
"I doubt it. Why would there be?... If people want to put something on the moon or send signals, that's fine -- it probably wouldn't take too much looking to find sillier things our tax dollars have done."
Evelyn De Hart, retired office worker, Bellevue
"I used to believe that there must be but I really don't believe that anymore. With all our modern technology, there would be some indication of intelligent life if it was there... I worry about those people who claim to have associated with aliens. They might have had dreams or something. I don't believe aliens are here amongst us. It's more like science fiction to me."
Connie Wheeler, Retired, Bellevue
"I think it's a possibility -- but I'm not sure there's intelligent life here sometimes! I really don't have any opinion on it. It's the same with crop circles -- I don't know what causes them. At some point, there will maybe be some contact, but it's a question mark. The conditions on here on Earth are pretty special. I think it would be psychologically interesting if someone did appear -- it would certainly change everything! And you hope that they have a sense of humor and will be helpful and help us deal with our problems."
Erin Kinski, Library page and student, Bellevue
"I believe it, yes. But I don't believe that it's possible for it to get here -- the kinds of technology that would've had to develop, and the amount of time it would've taken to get here, and tremendous amounts of energy, too -- I think it's more likely they'd send a probe rather than actual beings."
