By Ann Garretson
"What's the best thing your dad ever did for you?"
(asked at Crossroads Shopping Center on 06-13-96; published in the JA on 06-16-96)
Allison Brodine, Accounting associate, Woodinville
"Actually it was both of my parents -- they were so supportive of me when I was younger and got pregnant. They supported me and my decision to keep my child."
Wayne Stringfield, Software technical support engineer, Bellevue
"He got me into computers. He started me in computers when I was about 10 or 12. Actually, he got the computer but I spent most of the time using it."
Peggy Quinn, Retired orchardist, Wenatchee
"He taught me how to drive. We were in a 1936 Ford and I put in the clutch and got it started and backed over the cat, unfortunately for the cat."
John Harris, Retired engineer, Renton
"There are so many... I grew up in a very exciting time -- the Depression and the second World War. We were in Weston-Super-Mare, a small vacation resort in England, near Bristol. I was 10 when the war started and about 16 when it finished -- my formative years -- and he provided for us all the way through."
Tim Thomson, Product manager, Seattle
"Probably the best thing he did was pay for my college education. He was the sole provider -- my mom was unable to work due to a medical condition -- and it was kind of difficult. I got a B.A. in business and I think he's proud of me. Actually, I think he's just happy that I graduated. Happy Father's Day, Dad!"
David Rives, Software test engineer, Redmond
"It's probably thinking ahead... When I was in elementary school, he saw that I liked computers so he bought me my first computer. So that led to my interest in computers. And that led to my interest in college in computer science. And that led to my getting a degree and getting a job working with computers! He had the insight to foster my interest and I'm eternally grateful for him to help me achieve what I've done."
