Today's Issue
By Ann Garretson
"Does Whitewater make any difference to you?"
(asked at Presto Espresso, Totem Lake on 06-06-96; published in the JA on 06-09-96)
Kyle Beckstrom, Welder/fabricator, Kirkland
"Absolutely. I believe that if the investigation is not followed through, then we're not going to come up with any answers... They've got to follow-through because I think that anytime you have the so-called cultural elite, most of the time they operate above the law. And anytime you catch them in things, there are going to be problems. I'm leaning toward thinking that the Clintons may not be guilty of the exact charges as the governor of Arkansas, but they're involved, and they have more info than they're letting on."
Tina Stone, Administrative assistant, Bellevue
"No. I don't think that what Clinton did before he was president matters as long as he doesn't do anything to hurt the country now."
Garth Watkins, Barista, Kirkland
"Yes, because I think that our politicians should be held to a high standard of integrity... I don't follow the Whitewater events real closely because the chance of the truth coming out unadulterated is slim. The Whitewater scandal apparently is not within the White House but I believe it's just as important to follow through on that as it was with the Nixon scandal... Whitewater. Whitewash. They're the same."
Ellen Hibbs, Commercial driver, Kirkland
"No. I don't follow it. I don't know much about it. It just doesn't interest me. It's confusing, boring. Whatever's going to happen is going to happen."
Reese Miller, Sales, Seattle
"Yes. I think it's a character issue. And I don't think it should be something that's avoided the way it's being avoided by the Clintons. From what I read in the paper, they are really side-stepping the issue... I think they're hiding to stay in office. To me, it's just a big, crooked scam by the president. And I don't think he should be involved in something that important and use his power to avoid the issue."
Debbie Watkins, Homemaker, Kirkland
"Yes. I believe it exposes that Clinton is dishonest, underhanded. Kind of above the law. And the convictions obviously show that he was dealing with some dirty people. I don't think that's very good for an American president."
