By Ann Garretson
"What are your plans for summer vacation?"
(asked in downtown Kirkland on 05-30-96; published in the JA on 06-02-96)
Mike Hansen, Self-employed, Bellevue
"I've got a little business so I'll be working on that a lot of the time. And I have four grandkids so I'll be spending time with them. Nothing expensive. We'll be around here. I'll do the grandfather thing -- parks, the zoo... If I could do anything -- I've done Highway 1 in California, from LA to Big Sur. I'd like to do that again. That might be something to contemplate this summer..."
Jeff Rinehart, Self-employed insurance salesman
"This year, I'll be spending about 3 1/2 to four weeks with three grandkids -- three boys coming up from Texas. I'll take them around and show them different areas. Their ages range from 8 to 14 so they'll have different wants. I'd like to show them the Mt. Rainier area. I like the woods and the terrain up there. It's peaceful. And I'd like to show them Madison Park where I grew up."
John Hooberman, Waiter, Kirkland
"I will not be having one. I'll probably be just working all summer. If I do get time off, I'll probably visit my parents on Whidbey... If I could go anywhere, I'd go to Australia. My sister lives there. Next summer I'll probably take a month off and go there, and New Zealand, and stop by Fiji as well."
Pam Shepodd, Business manager, Woodinville
"We are going to drive to Santa Fe and visit for a week and then drive back up through Colorado and Jackson Hole and Yellowstone -- we're camping -- and then through Montana and then home... I've been to all of these places but my husband and children have not. We've been planning this trip for about two months because Yellowstone is packed and you have to book in advance in the 'camping cabins'... On the whole, especially when you have children, it's important to have a destination. When you're an adult you can wing it more easily."
Tony Mazzella, Traffic planner, Seattle
"Well, not much really. I'm originally from New York City so some family members will be coming out to see us this summer and that will coincide with my daughter's break from her pre-school and so we'll have a sort of an extended family reunion. My mom likes the Kirkland waterfront because it has outstanding views and it's not too crowded, and, coming from New York, an uncrowded view is a rarity... I just hope the weather is truly summer-like because when it is, almost anything you do here is really cool."
Carolyn Bowden, Interior designer, Newcastle
"We're going to Anchorage for my son's baseball tournament. He's playing in the Goodwill Games so we're going to Anchorage for ten days. And my family from the East coast is going there, too... If we weren't going to Anchorage, we'd be going to Disneyland. It's the last year of the Electric Light Parade. The parade has been going on since the beginning of Disneyland and it's just beautiful. And for small kids, it's incredible! But I guess it's run its course."
