"What do you think of the Seahawks' situation?"
(asked in downtown Kirkland on 02-02-96; published in the JA on 02-03-96)
Greg Christensen, Clerk, Kirkland
"Part of me will miss them because they were good entertainment. But it's not the end of the world. I wish they would've stayed in the first place -- not sold to Behring... In a way, they're betraying people. It seems that there's a game going on between Behring and the county, and if he leaves, he's not holding up his end of the contract. Then, the county should sue... I would like to see football stay here, but if the team left, it wouldn't break my heart."
Jean Rudolph, Retired nurse and teacher, Bellevue
"Well, I feel that there have been so many personal tragedies -- it's a bad-luck team -- that if they move to L.A., it might be better. They'd be warmer!... I listen to their complaints about the stadium and that they don't bring in enough revenue -- I don't think those are good enough reasons to leave... I will miss having a professional team, but I'm really a college football fan. I like the Huskies and all the college games. They're really more fun and exciting to me."
Debbie Archambreau, Pharmacist, Kirkland
"I haven't been following them for the last three years, so I'm kind of unaffected by the change. I will miss the fact that they make Seattle well-rounded. Their leaving would take away from that... For a while, I was really into them and then I gave up on them -- they're just kind of mediocre... But I think most people will probably miss having a football team in their city, and I would like to see them stay... I think Behring is kind of a jerk -- he's not taking other people's feelings into account. He knows he has the power, and he's just trying to abuse the situation."
Tom Bicek, Retired printer, Duvall
"It's okay. They can leave. I don't really care. I watch them once in a while -- when they play bad, I don't watch. I think suing is a good idea -- they do have a ten-year contract with the Kingdome... Behring probably always wanted to be in L.A... If it's not going to cost $300 million to make those expensive VIP boxes, I'd try to keep them here. I wish the Nordstroms would still own them -- it's a little more traditional. Paul Allen would be great. I like a home-owned team."
Phil Leising, Retired electronics manager, Bellevue
"I feel that the owners have been less than honorable. If I'm not mistaken, Behring was a resident of Wisconsin at one time and he should recognize the legacy of the Packers football team. The legacy is that Green Bay is the smallest professional football team in the country -- in a town of 20,000 -- and they sell-out the stadium all the time. So I think that Behring should spend more on the team -- he needs to get the players that can make the team a winner. Furthermore, I don't think he could make it fly in L.A. Two teams have left there already -- why would the ex-Seahawks do any better?... I'll miss them. I used to be a season ticket holder. But if they stayed put, I don't know if I'd be a full season ticket holder again because of the way they've been playing."
Victor Ghasemi, Business owner, Kirkland
"I think they shouldn't move after putting people through all of this. People worked hard to build the team and to move it now -- in a way, they're betraying people. And they shouldn't move because people have respect for them here... I'm a sports fan, but where I come from, Persia, we don't have football so I don't spend my time on it now. Our sports are soccer, wrestling, boxing, and stuff like that. I'm not a football fan, but I've talked to people and most people are unhappy about this. So I hope the Seahawks don't go."
